Additive Manufacturing standards enable broad industrialization

The first users and suppliers of Additive Manufacturing had to develop internal Additive Manufacturing standards all by themselves. New Additive Manufacturing standards enable for faster adoption of the technology and allow suppliers and users to develop applications much faster. In this report section major standardization efforts and the current status of their work are presented. A database provides insights into the Additive Manufacturing standards that have been published or are currently in development.

Introduction

Types of standards

In 2016, ISO and ASTM have provided a general guideline on how to structure standards regarding Additive Manufacturing into three levels:

general standards (e.gs., concepts, common requirements, guides, safety)
standards for broad categories of materials (e.g., metal powders) or processes (e.g., powder bed fusion)
specialized standards for a specific material (e.g., aluminum alloy powders), process (e.g., material extrusion with ABS), or application (e.gs., aerospace, medical, automotive)

This structure helps to guide the further development of Additive Manufacturing standards by identifying gaps and preventing overlaps. It also improves usability and acceptance among the Additive Manufacturing community, including manufacturers, entrepreneurs, consumers, and others.

Standardization organizations

Committees with AM related standards

International

The ISO/TC 261 is the most important international committee for standardization in Additive Manufacturing. Over 30 national standardization organizations around the globe are either directly participating or observing their work. The task is to harmonize the standards passed on national level into the international framework.

Next to the ISO/TC 261 some other ISO committees have also published standards with a connection to Additive Manufacturing such as ISO/JTC 1 (Information and technology), ISO/TC 61 (Plastics), ISO/TC 156 (Corrosion of metals and alloys) and ISO/TC 184 (Automation systems and integration). All corresponding standards are listed in the database below.

National

ASTM International (American Society for Testing and Materials) has formed an alliance with ISO in 2011 to combine efforts in structuring and developing new standards for Additive Manufacturing. Within the ASTM most standards are published by the committee ASTM/F42 on Additive Manufacturing, while the committee ASTM/F04 has developed their own standard for Additive Manufacturing in Medical and Surgical Materials and Devices.

Another example of a national standardization agency is the German DIN. Major activities regarding Additive Manufacturing take place in the committee NA 145 [XXX]. This committee is part of the joint group of ISO TC 261 and ASTM F42. Other previously long established committees such as NA 062 […] and NA 131 […] have published Additive Manufacturing related standards specific to their industry. However, they are not necessarily aligned in the international efforts with ISO/TC 261.

Organizations with AM guidelines

Many other organizations have issued their own guidelines or recommendations on Additive Manufacturing. Those can be under government regulation such as the FDA in the USA or private institutions such as the VDI in Germany (see table).

Certification organizations

To ensure compliance several certification entities such as DNV from Norway or TÜV from Germany test, inspect, and certify companies regarding selected Additive Manufacturing standards or guidelines.
